Indoor air quality plays an important role in your family's health and comfort. Fortunately, there are several simple steps you can take to reduce indoor pollutants and create a fresher, healthier home.
1. Replace Air Filters Regularly
Change your HVAC air filter every 1–3 months, or as recommended by the manufacturer. A clean filter improves airflow and helps capture dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
2. Improve Ventilation
Open windows and doors when weather permits to let fresh air circulate. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to remove moisture, odors, and cooking fumes.
3. Use an Air Purifier
A portable air purifier with a HEPA filter can help reduce airborne allergens, dust, pet dander, and some fine particles, especially in bedrooms or frequently used living spaces.
4. Control Humidity
Keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas or a humidifier during dry seasons to discourage mold growth and improve comfort.
5. Clean Regularly
Dust and vacuum your home frequently using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Wash bedding, curtains, and other fabrics regularly to reduce dust mites and allergens.
6. Reduce Indoor Pollutants
Avoid smoking indoors.
Choose low-VOC paints, adhesives, and cleaning products.
Store chemicals, paints, and fuels in a well-ventilated area outside your living space whenever possible.
7. Keep Air Ducts and Vents Clean
Ensure supply and return vents are unobstructed by furniture or rugs. Have air ducts inspected and cleaned if there is excessive dust buildup, mold, or after major renovations.
8. Maintain Your HVAC System
Schedule professional maintenance at least once a year to keep your heating and cooling system operating efficiently and to help maintain good indoor air quality.
9. Groom Pets Regularly
Brush and bathe pets as needed to reduce pet dander, and wash pet bedding frequently to minimize allergens.
10. Add Houseplants Carefully
Some houseplants can enhance your home's appearance and contribute modestly to indoor comfort. However, they should complement—not replace—good ventilation and filtration. Be sure to choose non-toxic plants if you have pets or small children.
